Phoenix Center Programs
The Family Effect is dedicated to providing hope, healing families and eliminating addiction in our community. The way that we accomplish this is by supporting the research based programs at the Phoenix Center. The Family Effect was founded in 1998 with the intention to make a positive impact through these programs designed to treat and positively change the lives of those in our community who are affected by substance use disorder. About Our Prevention Program
Phoenix Center prevention specialists deliver evidence-based programs and education to more than 20,000 people every year, and work to instill healthy beliefs and lifestyles in the community. They tailor programs to the needs of schools, businesses, churches, and many other groups. Our specialists work with people of all ages. We place a high priority on working with youth. The Phoenix Center’s prevention programs use the Risk and Protective Model. This identifies and reduces risk factors that make an individual or community more likely to experience problems. We also work to strengthen the protective factors that can help prevent individuals and communities from developing such problems.

World-Class Clinical Program
Kids who are exposed to addiction during their formative years are four times more likely to become addicted themselves. When this happens, everybody loses. Adolescents with a substance use disorder tend to miss a lot of school and typically fail to graduate. As they get older, they are often left to fend for themselves without proper education, healthcare or support. Soon the community must step in with extensive resources for multiple social services or even incarceration. In Greenville county 17% of our adolescents need treatment for a substance use disorder. Adolescents try alcohol, tobacco and other drugs for many reasons. They may be doing what other family members do. They may be trying to impress friends. They may be curious and seeking thrills. Or, they may be trying to dull the pain of their lives. Whatever the reason, it is dangerous behavior and the child is at risk of developing a substance abuse disorder. Research proves that the earlier the intervention, the better the prognosis. That’s why at the Phoenix Center, our counselors work with adolescents, ages 12-17, who are involved in risky behaviors, have emotional problems, and/or need help with family problems.

About Outpatient Services
Staff at the Phoenix Center know and understand the difficulties those beginning their road to recovery can face. That is why Phoenix Center staff place top priority on finding the best treatment fit for each individual. By working with clients and giving them a choice in their treatment options, clients can be assured that they will have a treatment plan that is designed for them and their unique journey. Outpatient services are most effective when the individual has a mild or moderate alcohol or other substance use disorder and/or other mild behavioral health condition(s). When a client comes in for treatment, Phoenix Center staff will also assess them for adverse childhood experiences and medication management needs. Services are primarily offered in a group setting, but also include individual and family counseling. Outpatient services are offered primarily at the 1400 Cleveland Street location.
Residential Programming

Serenity Place & Women's Residential
Adult Residential & Withdrawal Management

About The Residential Treatment Center
Serenity Place is a residential treatment center for pregnant women, young mothers and their infants to preschool-age children. One aspect of Serenity Place that makes it unique from many other residential treatment programs is that it allows mothers to keep their young children with them. When a young mother and her children enter Serenity Place, the family has already been down a long and dangerous road. The mother is struggling with addiction. Without help, she may lose custody of her children to the foster care system. It is likely that she may also be escaping from sexual abuse. For every five young mothers that come to us for help, four have experienced trauma. This abuse often plays a role in the onset of the mother’s addiction. The children, through no fault of their own, have suffered too. They often come to us traumatized and confused. Their daily lives have veered from chaos to deadening neglect. Due to such circumstances, the children are often delayed on several developmental levels. Many of them are unable to connect emotionally. Without help, they will be unprepared for any kind of classroom environment.

About The Detox Program
The Phoenix Center has a 10-bed Medical Detox Unit on-site for any person who is likely to experience withdrawal symptoms. Our Medical Detox Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with counselors, nurses, and on-call physicians. For safety, comfort and well-being, our clients are closely monitored During their detoxification process, clients begin to regain mental and emotional stabilization. They are expected to attend groups focused on engagement and introduction to the treatment process. Once detox is completed, usually within 5-7 days depending on the drug and severity of use, discharge planning is provided to transition clients into treatment services. Detoxification is our opportunity to offer patients information and to motivate them for longer-term treatment and ultimate recovery.
